Excel 2007 and Pivotal 5.9 Web Services Example 1
« on: February 03, 2010, 10:35:33 AM »

After weeks and weeks of trying to figure this out I have a DLL that can be called from Excel VBA code and will work against a Pivotal web Service.  The attached zip file contains a VS2008 project and Excel 2007 test worksheet.

I used the Pivotal SampleCompany web service and set it up stock in our Pivotal 5.9 system.  It probably doesn't matter whether it is a 5.9 or 6.x web service.  I also used Excel 2007 but there's a good chance the DLL will work with Excel 2003 - I haven't tried it.

This is the first attempt and it is incomplete but it does illustrated reading and writing data with the web service.  I would welcome constructive comments and I will also publish the project as it continues to be refined.

Stupid of me not to mention that the compiled ready to go sofware has my web service address which is an internal network address and will of course not work for you.

That would be a good enhancement - how to change the URL at execution time.  So if you want to try this stuff you will have to open it up in VS2008 and modify the web reference to the correct URL.

Attached is attempt #2.  Boy my C# skills are poor - I welcome constructive comments.

This attempt reads the entire company table and populates a worksheet, inserts a new company, deletes a company, updates a company, etc.  The whole thing seems to work ok but who knows - I could be stomping all over Windows.

I welcome any feedback and will probably stay quiet and continue to refine unless someone has comments or questions.

cheers.
