creating email or new activity errors out

We installed Pivotal 6.0 on a windows xp pro service pack 3, with office 2007. The user can create a new appointment in outlook and link it to Pivotal. However from within Pivotal, creating a new email errors out: Construction error: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
